Comparing X1500 and SX-10-001 LTO Solutions

The XenData X1500 runs on a Windows 7 workstation and includes a single LTO-5 tape drive. It uses Windows Explorer to archive and restore files to and from LTO. The operation is simple using copy and paste or drag and drop. The SX-10-001 also manages a single LTO tape drive but it has enhanced capabilities. Both solutions provide comprehensive management of offline (externalized) LTO tapes, including the ability to browse offline tapes. Additionally, LTO tapes can be easily moved between systems which opens up many possible workflows.

The main differences between the two solutions are described in the table below.

X1500

SX-10-001

All archive and restore operations are run from the workstation to which the LTO drive is attached. The software license allows the LTO drive to be moved from one workstation to another.

Attaches to a network and allows multiple Windows and Mac clients to perform LTO archive and restore operations. It also supports local archive and restore operations - like an X1500.

All archive and restore operations are performed using Windows Explorer. These use either copy and paste or drag and drop. The X1500 does not support archive and restore operations performed using a program other than Windows Explorer.

Archive and restore operations may be performed using a wide range of programs including NLE and media asset management applications. Files and folders may also be archived and restored using copy and paste or drag and drop using Windows Explorer or Finder.

The X1500 will not automatically span files and folders across LTO tapes.

Automatically spans files and folders across LTO tapes. Files continue to be written to the SX-10 3TB disk cache while tapes are being swapped.

Expandable by installing two or more LTO tape drives on the workstation. However, the system will not automatically produce replica tapes - files must be manually copied to each tape using Windows Explorer.

Expandable to two LTO tape drives (model SX-10-002) or to a configuration with a robotic tape library up to 50 slots and two LTO drives. All expanded systems may be configured to automaically create replica tapes.

Does not support restore of deleted or over-written files.

Allows restore of deleted and over-written files.

Provides complehensive error message logging but does not include an Alert Module.

Includes an Alert Module which provides email alerts and on-screen messages in case of problems.
