Short Description


A XenData SX-550 Series archive server manages LTO or Sony Optical Disc Archive (ODA) libraries and RAID. It provides a highly scalable network attached storage (NAS) device where files are written to LTO or ODA cartridges and disk. Files can be archived and restored in two ways: as a standard file system where files and folders are written and read just like writing to and reading from disk; or alternatively as Object Storage using a XenData XML API.

The SX-550 Series is offered in five standard configurations, each running Windows Server 2012 R2 and optimized for video archive applications: four models have a single server and the SX-555 is a server cluster for high availability.

Native Compatibility with Most Applications

The digital archive has a file/folder interface for both archiving and restoring. Furthermore, there is no need to load any special software on client computers. This means it works with most applications - from MAMs to Windows Explorer or Finder. 

Alternatively the SX-550 Series has an Object Storage interface, accessed via an API. A growing number of MAMs are using this Object Storage interface.

Supports Multiple Simultaneous Applications

Create multiple LTO or ODA cartridge groups and use for different applications. For example combine a MAM archive and a simple file-folder archive - all with one XenData system.

Designed for Networks

Built-in RAID cache delivers high performance in a network and the NAS architecture makes it easy to deploy. Interfaces via 1 GigE or 10 GigE.

The solution is optimized for both CIFS/SMB and FTP network protocols. You can use either protocol - or both simultaneously.

Supports Windows, Mac and FTP Clients

Windows, Apple OS X and FTP clients are natively supported.

Fast Archiving

Files are written at RAID speed. The system does not wait for LTO or ODA cartridges to be mounted.

Fast Restores

The system restores a queue of files in the shorted possible time. The restore requests are processed in an order that minimizes unnecessary tape movement in the case of LTO or unnecessary disc swaps in the case of ODA.

Partial Restores

Allows a clip to be restored from LTO without need to restore the whole file.

Built-In Data Protection

The system will automatically create extra backup copies of LTO cartridges for offsite retention.

LTFS Prevents Vendor Lock-In

LTO cartridges are written in either the LTFS interchange format or the open standard TAR format. The use of a standard format prevents vendor lock-in - proprietary formats mean that it is very costly to ever convert to another vendor.

Industry Standard File Security

The archive server integrates fully with the Microsoft Windows security model based on Active Directory. There is no need to configure proprietary user access, which would be a time consuming activity.

Manages Unlimited Externalized Cartridges

The system manages any number of externalized cartridges, providing an unlimited total capacity. There are no license fees for externalized capacity.

When offline files are accessed, the system prompts with email alerts and on-screen notifications, identifying the cartridge that should be imported back into the system.

A range of different reports helps manage the entire archive including all externalized cartridges.

Strong File Version Control

Accidentally over-wrote or deleted a file? No problem; just select the file and restore deleted files or previous versions.

Scales to Multiple Petabytes of Near-line Capacity

Scales to support multiple enterprise-class robotic libraries from a wide range of manufacturers.

High Availability Cluster Option

The SX-555 is a server cluster that provides high availability. When configured to manage two LTO robotic libraries and mirror files across them, the system has no single point of failure.

Worldwide Onsite Support

The server hardware comes with onsite support from HP which is available in most locations worldwide.
